“I was at Bario only once and that was from mid December 1965 to mid Jan 1966, so these shots were taken within this time span. At the time I was a 21 year old RAF J/T and was there to maintain the HF, VHF and UHF transmitters and receivers for ground to air com and back to Labuan where I was based. At Bario my other jobs apart from making and tending the smoke fires also included keeping a check on available fuel, taking over from the controller when he wanted a break of food, and sending early morning weather reports (normally 10/10th at 500 ft or less measured by how far up the mountains we could see) also checking the condition of the runway, heavy rain could make it unusable very quickly.”
